Visit Every Six Months for a Dental Checkup to Protect Your Smile

When you come to our office for your dental checkup, Dr. Koo and his staff will:

  • Thoroughly clean your teeth to remove plaque and stains, including in between teeth where your toothbrush might miss
  • Check for tooth decay using a cavity detector with advanced technology to pinpoint the earliest stages of cavities
  • Take full-mouth X-rays to check for dental issues that may need closer inspection
  • Perform an intraoral exam on the soft and hard tissues of your mouth
  • Perform an extraoral exam focusing on areas of your head and neck closest to your mouth
  • Perform a visual oral cancer screening for early detection of the disease
  • Check for signs of gum disease, which are difficult to spot at home

Depending on what we find during your examination, we may recommend additional treatments to help prevent bigger problems to your smile. These could include:

  • Dental sealants to prevent tooth decay
  • Fluoride treatments and varnishes to stop small areas of tooth decay and prevent new cavities from forming
  • Mouthguards to eliminate teeth grinding or to protect your mouth during sports or other activities

Common Questions About Dental Cleanings & Exams

How long does a dental cleaning and exam take?

The time needed for an exam and cleaning can vary, depending on the condition of the patient’s teeth among other factors. If it’s been a long time since you’ve seen a dentist, these services will likely take longer than they will for someone who visits a dentist regularly. Still, we can usually complete an exam and cleaning in about an hour.

How much is a dental cleaning and exam?

The standard cost for a cleaning and exam at our office is $346. Many insurance plans cover the cost of two cleanings and exams a year. Those without insurance may want to join our in-house savings program. A flat fee covers the cost of two annual exams and cleanings and offers a reduced rate for other services. Our $199 new patient special includes a standard exam and cleaning with X-rays and a kit for at-home teeth whitening.

How often should you get a dental cleaning and exam?

For the best results, you should see us every six months for a cleaning and exam. It helps keep your teeth and gums in great shape, which is why many insurance plans cover the cost of biannual cleanings and exams. For those without insurance, we have an in-house savings program that covers the cost of these services and offers discounts on other services too.

Are dental cleanings and exams necessary?

The American Dental Association recommends brushing your teeth at least twice daily and flossing once a day. Unfortunately, that alone is not enough to prevent harmful plaque buildup that causes cavities and gum disease. That’s why it’s important to see a dentist twice a year to ensure that your teeth and gums are clean and healthy.
